For the family outings, such as to Silloth or Beckfoot, the picnic lunch was an essential.
After a morning of activity on "The Green" (football or cricket depending on the season) and the beach, the picnic lunch was always enjoyed.
The contents of the picnic were pretty consistent. Sandwiches, always using sliced white bread, were wrapped in aluminium foil to keep them as fresh as possible.
- A flask of Heinz tomato soup was a must on the colder days.
- Egg or egg and tomato sandwiches.
- Salmon sandwiches, made with mashed tinned salmon.
- M and S mini sausage rolls.
- M and S halved mini pork pies.
- Fruit, often apples or bananas, or slices of orange.
To finish off, cakes which could include
- M and S Angel cake.
- M and S Chocolate eclairs
- M and S individual small lattice topped apple pies.
- "Angels' whiskers" (Sponge buns with the top scooped out, filled with whipped cream, the sponge taken out then repositioned as two "wings" all then dusted with icing sugar.
- Rock buns, sometimes fruit but more often with jam. (Made by Bella and Gran from Hart Street.)
Drinks
- Drinks included Robinson's Lemon Barley Water and flasks of tea.
